Supplying timber that is legal (e.g EUTR complaint) it is not the solution for good forest practices most organisations have gone a step further to ensure that the timber or forest products are from a responsible and sustainable forest management system i.e leaving the forest in a condition where it will also benefit future generations of the plant, animal and people.
Several organisations are involved in ensuring that the timber or forest products are sustainable, these help monitor the biological, social and economic factors.
Examples of Forest Certification Schemes promoting Sustainable Forest Management include:
- Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
- Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)
- Canadian Standards Association (CSA) & Sustainable Forest Management System (SFM)
- Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)
- Malaysian Timber Certification Council – MTCC & Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS)
