Metsä Wood launched The Open Source Wood initiative to accelerate innovation in wood construction industry. We are calling on architects and engineers to share their knowledge about prefabricated wood elements to grow the use of wood in construction.
The first ever Open Source Wood Hackathon was organised in Nantes, France in December. The Challenge was to create an innovative wood element for building design in multidisciplinary teams, mentored by experts.

New projects and reference cases
The temporary wooden market hall in Östermalm turned out to be a bright, luminous, modern and truly welcoming place with stores and restaurants. The temporary market hall has almost doubled the number visitors per week compared to the old hall. Glulam and Metsä Wood’s Kerto® LVL beams were used in the roof’s grid structure, which is a strong shape, but makes the construction appear lighter and requires less material. A fire protection treatment on the wooden parts guarantees the fire safety of the temporary market hall.

Partnerships in industrial wood element construction
The construction industry is undergoing a major transition, with construction moving from building sites to off-site manufacturing. Industrially standardised products increase the quality and efficiency of construction. The turnaround time on building sites is shortened and the amount of errors reduced, and there is hardly any wastage of materials.
Metsä Wood has been making long-term efforts to find permanent partners for industrial wood construction. The aim is to develop an ecosystem based on Kerto LVL (laminated veneer lumber) products.
In 2017 we launched the innovative L-panel as part of the Kerto® LVL product range. Designed with light and non-load-bearing applications in mind, Metsä Wood’s new L-panels are up to 10 per cent lighter than the rest of the Kerto® LVL products, while still delivering exceptional dimensional stability.
